I don’t really understand what the author of the post was aiming for i.e. whether to get titles of books that featured “love” between siblings or whether he/she wanted someone to reassure him/her that “love” between a brother and sister is acceptable. I was shocked to say the least even though I had come across a couple of articles earlier this year on true stories about siblings who have had sexual relationships with one another and didn’t think they had done anything wrong and wanted to get their message across to the world.

I am just amazed at the audacity of us human beings to come out and start pestering everyone around them to believe or at least start planting the seeds of doubt in their minds on whatever skewed version of reality that person might be living in. I am NOT stating that change is a bad thing. But there should come a point where we should be able to draw the line and say when enough is enough. I mean come on! Having sex with your own brother or sister? *shudders at the mere thought*

I can’t even fathom the reason why someone would want to form a sexual relationship with their own blood relative. But I guess as it is the norm with us human beings, what is forbidden always seems more enticing and what entices us always tends to land us in shit loads of trouble.

Regardless of religion or culture, there should be a line that separates us from existing as mere animals and act upon the intelligence we have been equipped with to differentiate between right and wrong, to differentiate between modes of behavior acceptable for humans rather than succumbing to every forbidden desire that rises within us and prove once and for all that we deserve to be labeled as human beings instead of falling into the realms of shocking animalistic behavior as socially and culturally expected of us.

Anyone who avidly follows the various series that comes out in the US would definitely know what I am talking about. Especially those that follow the crime dramas such as Bones, Castle, The Mentalist etc would by now have a gut feeling on what exactly I am talking about here.
Out of all the dramas that I do collect and watch, the three mentioned above are those that I do watch regularly most of the time the day after they air in the US. Its not only the aspect of crime solving that leaves me coming back for more, its the character development and storyline that keeps us viewers grasping for something that will never reach fulfillment, at least not anytime in the future.

I got hooked on the series Bones because for one thing David Boreanaz is the lead actor in the series. Combined with the fact that Emily Deschanel who plays the role of Dr. Temperance Brennan, the scientist who remains sort of clueless to actual human emotions spars with Booth (David Boreanaz) on regular basis whilst Bones (Dr. Temperance) tries to convince Booth that heart is just a piece of muscle whilst Booth wants to convince Bones otherwise and added to that the story development of the various other cast members in the series makes it highly entertaining. But what keeps me and most of other Bones fanatics on tenterhooks every new freaking episode is the age old question, would they or wouldn’t they at last get together on this episode? Would this be THE episode and so on!

So far us viewers have been cheated out on this in really sneaky ways. Take for example the season finale of the last season of Bones. After watching the episode after such hype was created regarding it by the producers of the show, I was so disappointed that I felt like smashing the screen of the televison and went as far as to vowing that I wouldn’t watch the current and new season of bones. Alas, it wasn’t to be, because maybe I am just a bitch on myself? This season the story is all about how Booth surviving his brain tumor surgery, at last wants to confess of his love to Bones, but is prevented by Dr. Sweets, the FBI’s psychiatrist’s advice against it for the time being. And I let myself be tortured every single frigging episode of this season waiting in breathless anticipation for the final moment in which Booth would declare himself to Bones. Duh!!

And yes moving on to Castle, which I got hooked onto pretty quickly after watching the first episode is the next torturous element. Why do the blasted producers have to create the chemistry between two characters and not deliver on it I would never know. I have read several discussions on the topic and most agree that its because producers are mostly afraid that viewer ratings would drop once the climax of the show has reached. Others are convinced that getting the two main characters involved romantically ruins the crime solving aspect of the show and that there would be no more room for growth in the series to which I totally disagree. We have all witnessed how great the Friends series was because it had the best of endings that anyone could ever hope for. And the currently ongoing comedy The big bang theory doesn’t seem to suffer any such horrors of drops in viewer ratings just because Leonard and Penny at last got romantically involved together.

And don’t get me started on Mr. Patrick Jane (whom I continually drool upon) and Lisbon in the Mentalist. Jane is so appealing and sexy and Lisbon is the opposite of all that (which I don’t mean in a bad way) but rather that they complement each other on these levels, seem to be headed towards the same dismal storyline as well. At least Jane has his revenge and vengeance to get over before he can even bring himself to acknowledge that he is a free man. Sigh!!

But being the stubborn headed fool I am and the one who always spins romantic tales in the air or build castles or whatever it is that you build in the air, I would continue to watch every episode that comes out, bear it whilst gritting my teeth, and wait hopefully for the next episode or the next season where at last my dreams may become realized, or NOT!

What’s it about returning to work after a long weekend that has everyone groaning and moaning about it? With last Thursday combined with our usual weekend was a three day weekend which all working folks looked forward to, one of the main reasons being that 2010 is just the pits when it comes to public holidays.

So here we are, at the end of the glorious three day weekend and the groaning and moaning has started in unison on Facebook. I for one am dreading the return as well. I just can’t put my finger on exactly why it is I am dreading it. One could just say that Maldivians are plain lazy when it comes to work and be done with it, but I think there are much more deeper reasons for that reluctance to return to work after spending a couple of days at home.

Unlike when one takes their annual leave, when a holiday such as this one comes up, everyone has time off from work and thus the fun factor of such a vacation time short as it maybe is multiplied. Thus it so happens that most of the time employees can’t wait to return to work after an annual leave, some people out of boredom and the rest just cause they start feeling restless with pointless nothings to do in life. But this is so not the case after time off from work where your loved ones too get to put their feet down and have fun at home. Thus, I think this is one of the contributing factors towards why we feel such a reluctance to return to work after a long weekend such as this one.

Other reasons include of course the factor of not having any job satisfaction. I agree that most Maldivians they don’t really have a clue as to why they find themselves in a particular career path. Most of the time except for doctors and teachers and engineers, the choice is made for them when they first apply for a job right after their O’levels or A’level exams. And the lucky few who have good enough results to snare a scholarship, go off on one that is under the training requirement of the office, regardless of whether that maybe the most suitable career for the person. So down the road, most of us find ourselves in careers not of our choosing but rather a career we were “forced” into because most of us want that degree or masters in our names regardless of whether or not it is to be the best thing for us.

Thus with no satisfaction from a career which one has no interest in combined with the time off from work where everyone gets spend sometime doing what they like best a.k.a relaxing with loved ones, I guess its no surprise that most of us are dreading the return to work tomorrow.

Anyhow, lets hope the feeling passes by soon and we become career-driven and opportunistic bitches and bastards by the start of the work week!

This was a move initiated by the President in a unique experiment in democratic transparency, who is a BlackBerry owner, and the first American president to use email while in office who agreed to copy G2 in on his otherwise highly confidential electronic communications.

Here I have made a selection of my favorites from the email correspondences. Definite laugh-out-loud moments guaranteed.

Honey, it’s totally sweet of you to try to help, and I know how much you love the Jonas Brothers, but, see, they’re celebrities, not economics experts, so I don’t think I’ll be putting one of them in charge of the Commerce Department like you suggest! You probably saw that headline “Obama Team Embarrassed And Desperate As Yet Another Nominee Withdraws”, but we’re not THAT desperate! For example, there’s usually one or two humorous articles in the New York Review of Books, and sometimes they run some pretty awesome letters in the Economist and the American Prospect too. Seriously, have a look. See you tonight after homework. xx Dad

Hillary- see note from WH security staff below. Apparently your pass was used to access the West Wing at 2.45am last Tuesday night, and CCTV footage from a few minutes later shows Bill sitting at my desk in the Oval Office, ordering people around. Only (this is the weird part) there aren’t any people there. He picks up the phone a couple of times to shout instructions at people, but the call logs show he was just dialling his own cellphone. Can you maybe have a word? We can sort out counselling/therapy, if that’s helpful.

And I’ll admit I chuckled at tip number eight – “Her Majesty does not appreciate being winked at like George Bush did in 2007; the incident caused a tense standoff after she ordered all Trident missiles to be reprogrammed to target Washington in preparation for a retaliatory nuclear attack.” (I assumed that was one of your dry British jokes, but I checked with the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and he tells me it really happened and we agreed to cover it up – Jesus.) Anyway, one follow-up question: what’s the correct protocol at the state banquet for when Prince Phillip adjusts his hearing-aid, leans over confidentially to his wife, and yells: “Who the Dickens is that dark-skinned chappie sitting at our dinner table, Liz?
All: I know that many of you, like me, have found it hard to concentrate on work because of a persistent, rumbling, human-like noise — “like a cackling”, as someone described it. It started around the time of the press leaks suggesting I might back down on my plan to give the 9/11 mastermind a civilian trial in New York, reverting to a Cheney-style military tribunal. It’s been getting louder (and “more triumphalist”, as Axelrod put it, jamming his fingers in his ears) ever since. Well, acoustic engineers have traced it to some sort of sprawling secret compound in Wyoming that, weirdly, doesn’t appear on Google Earth (!) – we’re investigating further, but meanwhile, industrial-style earplugs and noise-cancelling headphones are available from the facilities office. Patience, everyone. Barack

So finally last week I got round to doing this on Thursday morning. Opening up a current account proved to be a smooth process. Since my VISA debit card as well as online banking accounts are all linked to the said saving account, I inquired regarding what is to be done in order to change both to my new current account. This too was taken care of once I filled out the necessary forms. The clerk then informed me that I had to go to the customer service counter and request them to transfer all my funds in the savings account to my current account and close the savings account under my name.

I headed down there and I was requested to send in a letter with my cheque book requesting all that to be done to my account. I managed to send in the letter with a friend of mine during my lunch break hour and at around 14:00 hours in the afternoon I received a call from the bank requesting that since there was a pending payment of some Rf 113.00 or so, they wouldn’t be able to transfer all my money as requested and close the savings account and that I was to come back and retrieve the letter of request that I had sent in upon their request. I was like *What the f***?*. Whoever heard of anyplace on earth that asks you to go in and retrieve a letter of request from a service provider? And the personnel who spoke on the phone managed to tell me that it was my responsibility to check whether the card centre has processed my payment and then again get back to the branch where my account was opened. I was like ugh! What kind of a service provider is BML if their customer has to toggle and communicate between two branches of its bank, and that also within this godforsaken teeny weeny island of Male’?

Upon my protests, the personnel on the telephone said she would check again on Sunday whether the transaction of the payment has been completed and let me know. So to my surprise she calls me up again today and tells me to come and collect my letter quoting that if I didn’t then the letter would just lie around meaning no one would remember to attend to it and check whether my request has been completed. What sort of shit-assed service was this I wondered and told that her that it sounded ridiculous to me that I had to call up the card center and check whether the payment has been made from my account. She replied that the card center wouldn’t let them know any information regarding payments made unless I myself made an enquiry.

Even before all this I had half the mind to move my account to some place much hassle free such as HSBC. But the thought that the convenience of paying all my bills online would be a foregone conclusion at this stage I decided to keep my account in BML regardless of the fact that people always continue to talk about the horrendous amounts of lost money and all other shitty service related stories about BML.

I believe that BML should have much sounder policies and procedures in place so that the customer doesn’t have to be the one who has to run between two separate service providers under their name and get drawn into the bureaucracy surrounding their archaic procedures. I am so pissed off with them that I can’t really be bothered to call up one branch and the next trying to find out whether they have gotten round to fulfilling an official request of mine that I made in writing. Ugh!

From the moment that the Circular No 2009/16 was published on the CSC website stating the reinstatement of salaries of civil servants effective 1st of January 2010, its the only thing anyone can talk about. I guess like everything else, most Maldivians do not have the proper information at hand to begin with, thus the surprise and glee on most of the faces of civil servants. And the funny thing is, most people mention this in terms of an increase in the salary when in fact what the CSC is doing is bringing back the salary level to its original state from the pay cuts that were enforced in October 2009.

If any of the civil servants had taken half the time to find out what the Civil Service Act which supposedly protects the right of all civil servants as a whole, they would have understood from the moment pay cuts were made that this reinstatement would take place after the three month period as mandated by the Civil Service Act.

Maldivians have the tendency to shoot off their mouths without half knowing what it is they are actually talking about. When the pay cuts were first enforced there was a lot of outrage from the general public which is quite understandable when you take into consideration how the general population especially living in Male’ barely survive on what they earn with the outrageous rents they have to pay for housing. However what I find highly disturbing is the fact that most do not even bother finding the reason why certain policies are brought about and how or what are the reasons why such a policy may have been implemented in the first place. And of course with the current crop of politicians who are divided on the minutest of issues taking things into their hands and spouting off whatever comes to mind, creates a greater rift in a society of ignorant people who do not even want to be enlightened in the first place. Of course partially this blame lies on the shoulders of the Civil Service Commission itself since they haven’t really done enough on making the public aware of what the Civil Service Act is all about.

With the opposition creating the ruckus that the positions of the upper management in the CSC are being held by wimps and are under the mastery of President Nasheed, the happily ignorant crop of civil servants acted as if a red flag had been waved in front of them, which in turn led to bad publicty all around which could could have been prevented in the first place if someone had thought of explaining what the Civil Service Act says regarding such pay cuts which amounts to something in the form of “If the country faces financial problems a pay cut could be imposed after discussions between the government and CSC for a period of three months, upon the end of which pay should be reinstated. If the need to impose pay cuts for a further period of time arises, this can only be done after re-evaluation of the financial situation of the country and further discussions between the CSC and government.” I bet if someone had explained this to the intended or if the intended had had the foresight to read the Act which protects them, the surprise everyone is expressing over the circular today could have been prevented.

Now let’s wait and see whether the government wants to impose pay cuts for a further period of time and whether the situation is deemed dire enough by the CSC to once again impose the same for another period of 3 months which I bet with everything I have no one is going to be ecstatic about with the rising costs of everyday life which has become the norm recently.

Damn!! Looking forward to long weekends and the fact that Eid holidays occuring twice a year bring week long holidays are the main reasons I get through the whole year of work, work & more work. But 2010 is just the pits in this regard.

On the month of February we get a lousy one day break in the middle of some godforsaken week and the dry spell goes on till the July 26th which blessedly falls on a Monday. And the most disappointing of all is the fact that Ramazan ends on a Thursday rendering Eid Al Fitr to fall on a Friday. So us poor folks would just get Sunday off meaning a three day weekend. Yay!! So much for the silver lining.

The only month to look forward to is November. The 3rd & 11th of November together with the Eid Al Al-ha holidays falling on this month would be a month which I bet everyone would look forward to since the academic calender also ends within November. I guess everyone should start making travel plans for November since rather than taking off on a 30 day break for your annual leave where most probably you stay at home and mope or watch TV and series till your eyes are red and all cross-eyed from the effort, it is just more fun when everyone gets time off from work at the same time!

So here’s to a depressing start to a new year. Happy new year everyone! xox

I have always held the view that nursing is a profession that is held by women and men who are compassionate to a fault with their patients. I have had it up here in my head that they perform one of the most praise worthy duties in life i.e. take care of us when we are at our most vulnerable state.

However, recently when I had to be at the hospital for a couple of days I have realized that the word compassion has to take on a new meaning if it is to be applied to the nurses working at our hospitals. I have always noticed that Indian nurses who work in the Maldives tend to be bitches, well most of them anyway and I have always had the opinion that this must be because we aren’t really of their blood and culture so who are we to receive their compassion and care eh? But then to my ultimate horror I have come to know that most Maldivian nurses aren’t that better off. I was with a patient admitted to the surgical ward, and I guess anyone would realize just how much care patients at such a ward would require without me laying it out for them. I found that people who didn’t have attendants either family or friends to be with them had a really hard time at the ward. With the nurse station just within hearing distance from the beds, nurses tended to ignore those who didn’t have the guts to go up to them and give them a piece of their mind. And to hear the pain that the patients are in just broke my heart bit by bit. No nurse saw it fit to come to the patient and show him a bit of care and compassion that eases our minds when we are sick.

It made me sick to the bone to identify this trait and wondered what had happened to the current generation of nurses that have come out. Are they being bred from a factory where they are automatically wired to just do the bare minimum to earn their paychecks at the end of each month and just leave everything else be? I have heard my mother talk about nurses who cared for her when she underwent labor to bear each of us, and she always talked about gentle touches on the forehead, quiet words of encouragement etc. which I guess was one of the reasons why my head has been up in the clouds for quite a number of years. To the contrary, one of my colleagues who gave birth around a month back had a different story to report. Nurses were callous to the point of being rude and a time where a woman needs encouragement from her fellow beings, she found it to be something straight out of a badly plotted horror movie which tends to leave your mouth with a bad taste once you have seen it.

Right after the IGMH surgical ward experience, I flew to Bangalore and there I experienced first hand how nurses should really be. They were considerate, kind and caring while effectively giving the care necessary for the patient’s survival even when at times the patient may not really be of the most gracious behavior.

I believe that compassion and care should go hand in hand and urge people of the nursing profession in our country to give compassion a whirl sometime. They might just gain a bit of satisfaction of a job well done and received to go along with the paycheck at the end of the month.

I for one find it really tiresome trying to decipher the meaning of what the person is actually trying to convey in a jumble of words that aren’t actually words. Whether it be an sms, a Facebook wall post or MSN or Facebook status message, it just raises my hackles when I see messages worded in such a manner.

I can imagine for instance if a person is pressed short for time and the only way he can convey an urgent message is to type in as fast as possible and press the Send button. But then just doing it cause its the latest fad is somehow ripping apart the beautiful language that English is.

I guess there are various reasons why people especially the youngsters tend to massacre the English language in this fashion. One reason of course being that everyone else in their peer group does it, so who would want to be left out and be the only one who is good enough in the language to make coherent sense when a sentence is put together eh? And I guess there are others who do it cause they might not have a proper command of the language and the only way English makes sense to them is to slaughter the words into pieces so that no individual who has a thorough grasp of the language would be able to make sense out of a string of nonsense!

I recently found this group on Facebook that has around 211,805 fans approximately, who hate it when people tend to talk, text or email or Facebook in the way discussed. I guess seeing that I am not the only one who gets annoyed when people do not make much of a sense in garbled bunch of words stringed together made me write this post more than anything else!

During the age of information which we are currently living in, with data relevant to anything and I mean literally anything available at the stroke of a couple of keys on your computer/laptop/mobile device, we are literally swamped with and bombarded with various types of information, sometimes more than what we can process. With the advent of Internet, ignorance has become a thing of the past and practically everyone has become specialized in every field possible on Earth.

Take for example a person who goes to a doctor, after searching for the causes of his symptoms on the Internet. A simple headache could mean anything from just too much stress to a tumor in your brain, and as humans we tend to think of the worst possible scenario and thus land up with the conclusion that a tumor has started to grow in his/her head. Sometimes such patients can be obstinate to the point that they aren’t satisfied until every investigation possible has been done to rule out the cause of the symptoms which the patient believes himself to be suffering. I bet some doctors would tend to find this an annoying habit and often caution patients not to believe and take into consideration everything you read on the Internet.

But then again, we all have to agree that though the information available at our fingertips can be misleading at times, the current generation would be at a total loss without it. I for one know that I would scream in frustration or most probably would have to be admitted in a mental asylum somewhere if this valuable resource were to be wrenched away from us.

However, sometimes I do wonder whether this knowledge which we are bombarded with from all sides everyday doesn’t have its adverse effects. Like the case of the patient with the doctor, a relatively small illness can trigger a sense of alarm in us after reading the possible cause of a symptom. This in turn creates tension within the patient, when recovery and well-being of us humans do depend on our mental stability as well. At times I wonder whether our forefathers were luckier, not to be aware of every little thing that kept happening on Earth, leading them to lead a life of less mental stress. But then again, knowledge does save lives, thousands of which would not have been possible at an era where ignorance indeed was a bliss!
